Our plan to strengthen democracy and defend our values

Calgary – The CFP invites Canadians to leave behind the political 20th century and join them in setting a new course to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Canada’s democracy is currently vulnerable, whether it be to foreign interference, domestic populism, or the erosion of public confidence, which is why the CFP has put forward a plan to strengthen democracy at home and abroad, positioning Canada to become a leader in the global democratic coalition. At the core of the movement is a simple but powerful truth: principles matter more than power. MPs must be accountable, not just to polls or to party bosses, but to the people they serve. The CFP also believes that Canada’s voice on the world stage through the public broadcaster must be strengthened, holding government to account and providing Canadians with access to trusted information. Furthermore, Canada needs to renew its relationship with Indigenous peoples on the basis of justice and partnership. These CFP initiatives promise to strengthen democratic values, promote national unity, and position Canada to become a northern democratic superpower and the bridge between the democracies of Europe and Africa across the Atlantic, and with those of the Asia-Pacific to the west.

“We need to talk about keeping this country together so that we can make it stronger,” says Dominic Cardy, Leader of the CFP. “Over the next four years, we need to make sure that whatever party is elected is held to account in terms of how they deliver on their promises to improve our democracy. When we talk about Alberta, we want to make it clear that there is an option for Albertans who believe in a strong and independent Canada, we understand the feelings of neglect you have and aim to integrate you into our national plans, ensuring your resources and perspectives are valued. We can only be a northern democratic superpower with Alberta. We can only develop a strong economy to help save democracies around the world with Albertan energy. We need to get Canada into a position where it can defend its independence, because nothing else matters if we can't hang on to our country. And we can’t hold on to our country if Alberta isn’t at its centre.”

On Giving Power to your Member of Parliament: Today, backbench MPs are merely voting machines for the party leader. The CFP will abandon Canada’s rigid party discipline and replace it with the UK’s more accountable model in which MPs have the autonomy to vote according to their constituents on matters outside of the party platform. When MPs only exist as voting machines, their constituents are not represented; the public is cut off from their MP, and the leader is cut off from public opinion. The application of free votes empowers citizens, strengthens local representation, and forces party leaders to earn – not command – support. This can help restore connection between Parliament and the people, and allows elected MPs to do their job of balancing their own views with those of their constituents, their party members, and their leader. This change costs nothing, requires no legal change, and would transform the way Canadian government operates.

On Mixed Member Proportional Representation: The CFP is committed to strengthening democracy at home by ensuring that every Canadian vote has real and fair impact. Today, elections can produce results where large portions of the population are left without meaningful representation in Parliament. To modernize Canada’s democracy while respecting its parliamentary heritage, the CFP will implement a Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) system. This would be achieved by adding a limited number of proportionally elected MPs to the House of Commons. The number of seats in the House of Commons would be increased by up to 25%, distributed proportionally by province or territory to allow voters to influence national representation in addition to their local Member of Parliament. List MPs will serve as full, ordinary Members of Parliament, accountable to all Canadians and party platforms. This change would ensure that Canadians vote under a system that better reflects their choices and the diversity of political opinion that exists across the country.

On Reconciliation: A 10-Year Path to Justice, Partnership, and Renewal: The CFP recognizes that Indigenous peoples have endured generations of discrimination, systemic exclusion, and the ongoing impacts of colonialism. Successive federal governments have failed to deliver meaningful progress toward reconciliation—undermining the well-being of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples and holding back Canada’s social, economic, and democratic potential. The CFP will break this cycle of failure with a time-bound, accountable, and collaborative approach to reconciliation by launching a comprehensive national reconciliation framework developed in full partnership with Indigenous peoples and their representative organizations at the national, provincial, and territorial levels. The CFP also commits to resolving all outstanding land, treaty, and governance claims within 10 years, clearing the path for renewed nation-to-nation relationships. Furthermore, the CFP will repeal the Indian Act following the resolution of all claims, replacing it with new agreements rooted in equality, consent, and mutual respect.

On The CBC/Radio-Canada: The CFP recognizes that fact-based journalism is a powerful tool against disinformation and propaganda. The CBC/Radio-Canada, as the national public broadcaster, should be refocused to serve the mission of aggregating and verifying national and international news, conducting investigative journalism, and contributing to a unified national narrative. The CFP also proposes that CBC/Radio-Canada be fully government funded and withdraw from the advertising market, freeing up an estimated $350 million in ad revenue to be shared among private media companies. These reforms of the CBC/Radio-Canada would allow it to be a tool for government to connect with Canadians while equally having responsibility to hold government to account and providing Canadians access to trusted and accurate information.

On foreign policy: The CFP recognizes that democracies and autocracies cannot co-exist, and asserts that Canada’s economic and foreign assistance programs must reflect Canadian values. As such, the CFP proposes that Canada create a National Democracy Promotion structure to fill the void that has been created by the US abandoning this work. Democracy is critical to global stability; with Canada on the path to becoming the world’s northern democratic superpower, Canada is well-positioned to take up this work to continue exerting the soft power required in the face of Russian and Chinese aggression. Canada should also enhance trade and political relationships with democracies and states working with Canada to democratize, will recognize Taiwan, and will open full diplomatic relations with Taipei.

On Law and order The CFP supports a wholesale reform of the RCMP and other federal police and security forces, strengthening CSIS, creating an external security force, and penalizing provinces and territories that tolerate expressions of extremism and hate. Furthermore, Canadians need to be safe, and part of that is bail reform. All too often crimes are being committed by repeat offenders and the current leniency on bail that is jeopardizing Canadian lives needs to be addressed.
