Canadian Future Party calls for Royal Commission on tax reform

Close the loopholes. Guarantee low & middle-income families don’t pay more.

TORONTO - Cameron Thomas, Canadian Future Party candidate for Beaches–East York, is committed to ensuring every existing tax credit and exemption still do their jobs. To create a Royal Commission on Tax Reform, the first genuine top-to-bottom review of Canada's tax code since 1966 and to make sure low and middle-income families don’t pay more.

“I'm not asking you to trust a commission you've never heard of, and I'm not going to hand you conclusions before the work is done,” Thomas said. “I'm telling you the rules I want to work by: test every credit against whether it still does its job, make sure lower- and middle-income Canadians don’t see their taxes increase, and make filing simple by default.”

The CFP is calling for a Royal Commission on Tax Reform, modelled on the 1962–66 Carter Commission, the last time Canada looked at its tax code from the ground up instead of patching it piece by piece.

Since March 2025, Ottawa has eliminated the consumer carbon tax, cut the bottom federal income tax bracket from 15 to 14 percent, removed the GST for first-time home buyers on new homes up to $1 million, and cancelled outright the 2024 budget's proposed increase to the capital gains inclusion rate. Real relief, yes, but not comprehensive reform.

“Every one of those changes is a targeted fix to the system we already have,” Thomas said. “Nobody has looked at the whole system since 1966. Even the C.D. Howe Institute, nobody's idea of a party mouthpiece, says Ottawa doesn't need tax tweaks, it needs a tax re-set. I agree.”

Thomas is committed to deliver on two files for Beaches–East York MP:

Introduce a House of Commons motion calling for the Commission's creation

Publish an annual, plain-language guide for Beaches–East York small businesses laying out changes across federal, provincial, and municipal tax rules. No government currently does this.

Thomas points to his own riding to explain why this matters. The Beach BIA and a stretch of Danforth Avenue sit entirely within Beaches–East York. In February 2026, Toronto increased its small business property tax discount from 15 to 20 percent. Real relief, but municipal, a different government and a different tool entirely from anything in federal tax policy.

“A small business owner on Queen Street East is dealing with federal income tax, a possible capital gains bill down the road, federal GST, and municipal property tax changes, all in the same year, and no one in any government has ever sat down and looked at how they add up together,” Thomas said. “That's the fragmentation this Commission needs to examine, not just federal tax brackets.”
