Seventeen years ago, Cameron Thomas moved to Beaches-East York, and he has never had a reason to leave. On summer weekends you will find him on the Starbucks patio, watching the neighbourhood go by, the same streets he has walked long enough to know which things have changed and which ones never will.
He's spent that whole stretch renting in the same building right here in the riding, one of the few places that's stayed truly affordable the entire time. It's given him a firsthand education in something most housing debates only argue about in the abstract: affordable housing works, when it exists, and there isn't nearly enough of it. That's not a talking point for Cameron, it's his address.
He sees that same affordability gap widening for the next generation. Too many young adults in this riding can't afford a place of their own and are stuck living at home well into their twenties and thirties, not because they aren't working hard, but because the cost of living, rent, groceries, and taxes keeps climbing faster than paycheques do.
That same instinct toward affordable housing is what drew him to the board of Margaret's Housing and Community Services, where he spent six years working alongside one of Toronto's most important organisations supporting women experiencing homelessness. It gave him a broader, ground-level view of what happens when housing policy fails real people, layered on top of what he already knew from his own building.
By day he is a communications strategist with more than three decades of experience advising executives and political leaders. He currently serves as Chief of Staff and Press Secretary for the Canadian Future Party, a party he chose because it is the only one willing to give MPs the independence to represent the people who elected them, rather than voting however party leadership tells them to.
He is running because this riding deserves someone who already knows it and is willing to be honest about what it needs. He believes democracy should mean the riding's voice comes first, not the party's. He's not offering more of the same; he's offering a real alternative.
